About Us
Background
There are a number of separate organisations in the UK that provide information and advice on the use and application of IT within the construction industry. Although these are generally complementary, there was recognition in 2007 that these organisations needed to establish a more collaborative way of working that would enable them to serve the industry in a coherent and coordinated way. It was agreed to set up an umbrella organisation and Uniting Construction Information (UCI) was formed.Vision
The UCI's vision is to improve the performance of the UK construction industry through the better use of Information and Communication Technology.Mission
Our mission is to establish an effective network of member organisations and to provide a channel of communication between the UCI and the UK construction industry stakeholders including government, academia, industry representative organisations, and employees throughout the supply chain. Objectives
- To become the first port of call as a gateway for advice, knowledge and skills to enable the effective use of ICT in the construction industry
- To provide a clear message to the construction industry about the value our member organisations collectively deliver and how the industry can directly benefit
- To promote the sharing of good practice in the use of ICT in the construction industry
- To respond effectively to industry requirements for understanding the status quo, distilling best practice, and delivering on their future vision
- To identify and encourage collaborative working and joint projects utilising the best available skills from the member organisations; leading to a coherent bi-annual programme of work
- To commit to sharing and signposting information and expertise with construction industry practitioners via the Internet.
Membership
Membership of UCI is open to any organisation that provides information and advice on the use and application of ICT in the UK construction industry. These organisations could be completely ICT focused, or they could be a sub-group within a larger organisation. They will typically be representative bodies with their own membership structures. Organisations which exist solely for commercial gain will be excluded.Governance
Each member organisation should identify two UCI representatives; one to represent their secretariat and one to represent their members. Meetings will be held at least quarterly; hosted and chaired on a rotational basis by each member organisation. UCI representatives are expected to attend regularly. Non-attendance for two consecutive meetings without giving apologies may result in membership being revoked at the discretion of the UCI representatives. The UCI has no hierarchy, although it needs to be professional in the way it operates. Any member organisation is encouraged to suggest or identify issues to be discussed at meetings. Where UCI decisions are required, one vote per member organisation is allowed. Quorum will be met with a majority of the entire membership of the UCI (inclusive of those members not present).
Specific duties to be shared between the member organisations include (but not exclusively):
- Co-ordination and agenda setting of meetings
- Chairing of meetings
- Management of the UCI website
- Minutes of meetings (this to be rotated along with the chair)
- Contribution to relevant consultation papers on behalf of UCI
- Promotion of UCI at appropriate local, regional and national events
- Representing UCI on national groups
