The Building Services Research and information Association (BSRIA)
BSRIA is a research, consultancy and test organisation helping companies in the built environment become more efficient and effective. BSRIA’s membership, technical and commercial services add value to the customer’s business, save money and give peace of mind in all aspects of work: design, supply, construct and operate.
Aim and Objectives
- To provide the customer with the best solutions to the most searching problems ensuring complete confidentiality and individual service at all times.
- BSRIA gives confidence in design, added value in manufacture, competitive advantage in marketing and strategy, profitable construction, effective commissioning and accurate measurement, and efficient building operation and maintenance.
Mission Statement
“To enable the building services and construction industries and their clients to enhance the value of the built environment, by improving the quality of their products and services, the efficiency of their provision and the effectiveness of their operation”.
Key Activities (including outputs produced to date)
- Membership, information and training, including Infonet Portal: includes publications for the building services industry, with single and site licence software as well as loan publications from BSRIA library.
- Airtightness: BSRIA airtightness for compliance to Part L1 and L2 building regulations. Member of ATTMA, the appointed air pressure testing organisation for the BINDT.
- Business improvement: Provides tailored research, training and consultancy of wide range of operations management topics.
- Design innovation: offering expert consultancy as well as laboratory and on-site testing services. Key areas of expertise include energy efficiency and emissions, integration of renewable, water in buildings, legionella, waste management, condition monitoring and failure investigations.
- FM engineering centre: helps in the day-to-day and strategic tasks for building operations and maintenance.
- Instrument solutions: it is a total solution organisation offering the instrument use of comprehensive service for their test and measurement requirements.
- Microclimate centre: to develop computer models, construct physical mock-ups and confirm and validate system performance on-site.
- Process and productivity: to assist construction in achieving optimum management and performance of design and installation process. Involved in I3CON- major EU project led by Dragados on Integrating Intelligent Industrial Construction.
- Testing and certification: offers an independent, traceable and accredited test for suppliers to the building services industry. Test and certification are UK AMCA accredited
- World wide market intelligence: to conduct independent research and consultancy for global markets including air conditioning, heating, structure cabling, bathroom equipment, plus UK FM and contracting.
Programme of work for 07/08
- On the technical side, work in the energy related areas will grow strongly, particularly in the airtightness testing area, with most of the growth in dwelling testing.
- On going activity in I3CON and MBEKTN.
- Publications include renewables, controls.
- Market research growth will be concentrated in the Far East- we are opening an office in Beijing.
- Overall growth in turnover of about 10%.
The Business Model
- Business Operational model: the Building Services Research and Information Association owns BSRIA Limited which does all the trading and provides services to the construction and facilities industries and their clients. Both companies have aboard of directors with more non executives than executives, 9 in all. The directors are elected by the members.
- Funding Mechanisms: BSRIA earns its income from a range of services and products, of which 10% comes from member subscriptions and publications.
