Constructing Excellence in the Built Environment (CE)

One of the cross industry bodies that was formed in the mid nineties as a response to the Latham’s report (Constructing the Team) and Egan’s report (Rethinking Construction) to respond to the construction industry’s need to improve the service it provided to its clients whilst also ensuring future viability for the wide range of organisations that operated in the industry.

Aim and Objectives

Supporting the strategic forum for Construction’s targets, Constructing Excellence’s strategic objectives are:

  • Improving performance through increased productivity and competitiveness.
  • Improving industry image by taking action to create a step change in culture, in the development of people, enhanced engagement with the community and customers.
  • Engagement and taking action with individuals, businesses, organisations and industry associations.

“Constructing Excellence aims to deliver individual, corporate and industry excellence in construction”.

Key Activities (including outputs produced to date)

Bringing value to the customers’ businesses through six core activities:

  • Innovation and Research: includes a number of action research projects, working groups and confidential learning club.
  • Measurement and Diagnostics: CE construction industry KPIs have been utilised by both public and private bodies.
  • Leadership and Influence: working closely with government, strategic partners, firms and industry organisations to shape the future of the industry and drive improvement.
  • Business to Business Networks: CE business-to-business networks are used to build relationships with clients, contractors and suppliers from across the supply chain and across sectors.
  • Showcasing and Exemplars: provides a range of opportunities to showcase members’ experiences, and to share and learn new ideas and techniques.
  • Tailored Services for Business Improvement: bringing the latest best practice to the industry by developing a package of improved services designed to tailor the business need.

The Business Model

  • Business Operational Model: Membership is built around five membership forums (Buildings and Estates, Construction Clients’ Group, The Housing Forum, Infrastructure Task Force, Local Government Task Force) plus the IT Construction Forum which across all the above five forums and have strong links with key bodies in the built environment sector. There is also an extensive network of 12 regional partners and 36 local CE clubs.
  • Funding Mechanisms: a combination of a membership and commercial work.
