ICE/ICES Geospatial Engineering Board (GEB)
It is an engineering board of the Technical Affairs Division of the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) formed jointly with the Institute of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES). It was formed as the Joint Engineering Survey Board (JESB) in 1992 and renamed in 1999 as the Geospatial Engineering Board (GEB). It is the professional discipline of those people working within the built and natural environment involved in the construction and maintenance of, and output from, the Geospatial database.
Aim and Objectives
- To promote the profession of Geospatial Engineering within the ICE, the civil engineering profession and the general public.
- Provide literature and guidelines on Geospatial Engineering topics for civil engineers and other industry professionals.
- Promote the role of Geospatial specialists as members of the design and management teams on major civil engineering projects.
- Comment on Geospatial Engineering matters in the public interest.
- Support the ICES biennial Geospatial Engineer Surveyor Award for promoting and rewarding innovative applications of Geospatial Engineering.
- Develop an action plan to achieve these objectives.
Mission Statement
“To be the focal point for engineering survey knowledge and seek to promote excellence. The aim is to achieve this by diverse learned society activities and interest for the Joint Engineering Survey Board both within its own structure and in collaboration with other groups inside and outside the Institution of Civil Engineers/Institution if Civil Engineering Surveyors.”
Key Activities (including outputs produced to date)
- Meetings: regular and half day meetings have been organised on a wide variety of surveying and related topics..
- Publications: examples include a design and practice guide, technical articles and other informational material.
- Questionnaire survey: conducted to determine the extent of surveying training on civil engineering degree courses and the use of undergraduates as setting out engineers.
- Provided speakers for a seminar on Geospatial Engineering at the ICE 2003 Annual Conference in Belfast. (Seminars on Geospatial Engineering topic will feature in future ICE annual conferences).
- Presented ICE on the (now defunct) Standing Committee for professional Map Users.
- Annually held one meeting of the Board jointly with one of the ICE local associations.
- Prepared a CD for marketing purposes.
- Buried services initiative: to provide more coordination between the various utility companies in the exchange of information and for all utility services to be accurately related to the Ordnance Survey national framework.
Programme of work for 07/08
- The creation of a national network for mapping utilities.
- A programme of evening meetings and seminars to discuss and debate developments in the field of surveying
- The production of case studies, management and good practice guides.
The Business Model
- Business operational model including membership: The ICE/ICES Geospatial Engineering Board Panel is governed by the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the ICE and ICES. The composition of the panel membership is defined in the pertaining MOA, but the panel may decide to have less than 12 members noted in the MOA subject to being equal numbers from both sides. The panel is the specialist authority within ICE/ICES on technical and policy matters within its field of competence and may do anything within its resources that is consistent with the objectives of the ICE/ICES.
- Funding mechanism: There is a contribution through the ICE membership as the engineering budget is filtered to all the ICE groups; however the GEB members contribute in kind.
